Who we are

As the world's first and only gay Schuhplattler group, we got our start back in 1997. Of course there have always been Schuhplattler dancers who happen to be gay, but never as an organized group!

Then in early October 1997, Sepp and Schorsch (Joseph and George to non-Bavarians) invited ten gay Schuhplattler dancers from all across Bavaria to the very first practice session. Gruppenfoto 2002 About half of them actually came, and they had a grand time. The first performance followed just 2 weeks later, with six dancers and two musicians, at the Fall Ball of LUST, Munich's lesbian and gay dance club. The first plattler we danced together was the "Reit im Winkler", but for the encore we had to make do with a folk dance, the Sternpolka. In the meantime, many experienced Schuhplattler dancers have joined our ranks along with complete novices, and our performances are by no means limited to the gay & lesbian scene but also include things like Munich's famous Tollwood festival, block parties, wedding and birthday parties, church socials and club events all over Germany and abroad.

Since April 1998 the Old Catholic Church congregation of Munich has graciously allowed us to meet in the Dollinger Hall of St. Willibrord's church, located at Blumenstrasse 36, for our biweekly practice sessions.

Nearly all of our members reside in Munich and the surrounding area, and in 2001 the Folk Culture department of the Cultural Commission of the City of Munich began including us in its address directory under the category of "folk dance groups."

On April 22, 2001, we officially founded our club, registered in Munich under the name "d'Schwuhplattler - Die erste schwule Schuhplattlergruppe" (" - the First Gay Schuhplattler Group"). The group currently has 48 members. Our registration with the Munich Civil Court became effective on June 29, 2001 under the number VR 17314.
